Why do I want to teach?
I have had a variety of art teachers throughout my education, and until I reached high school I would have to classify them as mostly bad. Those negative experiences led to me attempting to conceal my interest in art until I reached eleventh grade, my Art 1 teacher noticed my passion and skill for art thus leading to my want to teach. My high school art teacher providing me with support and recognition made me realize that I was capable of producing pieces that not only exhibited my skills, but allowed myself an outlet for all the teenage problems I faced in high school. Becoming a teacher myself would be like continuing the cycle of inspiring the future generation of artists and art educators alike.
Besides continuing the cycle of inspiration, I have had a consistent inclination to be a teacher, but throughout the years the only variable was the subject that I wanted to teach. All teachers regardless of subject are important and help in the development of the future generation, but art has the ability to allow a student to really let go of personal, societal, and global issues. There are a lot of issues students are faced with and allowing a space for them to just create or even express their stance on those issues through art makes me want to teach. Throughout my own K-12 education I was yearning for a safe place to just relieve some of the pressures of growing up, and if I can help at least one student by creating a place where they can find peace and relief, I would feel content with my contributions to creating a better environment in the education system.
